The stonemasons at work

More than 100 stonemasons from across Europe gathered at Lincoln Cathedral for the European Stone Festival from 21 to 23 June.  Along with thousands of visitors, we had the unique opportunity to experience free of charge, the work of the stonemason at close quarters.

Since the festival took place for the first time at the end of the nineties in Freiburg, it has become an annual event and been hosted by a variety of European countries. This was the first time in ten years the event has been hosted in the UK.  During the weekend the masons demonstrated their skills and creativity in friendly rivalry and shared their experience and methods with one another. The theme for the carvings was ‘Food and Farming’, in recognition of the rich agricultural heritage of the county.

The stonemasons had three days to complete their designs with prizes awarded for the best in each category. After the judging, the pieces were auctioned off with proceeds going to the Lincoln Cathedral Fabric Fund. Lincoln is closely associated with stonemasonry through its world-famous Cathedral and is the only cathedral in the UK still to have its own quarry.
