Garden of Cosmic Speculation

Near Dumfries in south west Scotland there is a magical place called the Garden of Cosmic Speculation. Located on 30 acres of land, this sculpture garden is the brain child of landscape architect and theorist Charles Jencks.

The garden’s design is guided by the fundamentals of modern physics and according to Jencks, brings out the basic elements that underlie the cosmos.  Jencks’s home, Portrack House is at the heart of the gardens that includes sculptures and landscaping features based on mathematics, science, black holes, string theory and the ‘Big Bang’.

Unfortunately, the gardens are only open to the public one day a year. We visited last year – this year it is open on Sunday 5 May, so if you are planning to go to Scotland for the bank holiday, try and make a detour as it is well worth it. Partial proceeds from tickets sales go to benefit Maggie’s Centres – the cancer care foundation charity in honour of Jencks’s late wife Maggie. www.maggiescentres.org
