St. Andrew’s Church, Haughton Le Skerne (Grade I)

Ulrike Knox is the Church Architect for St Andrew’s Church (Grade I) in Haughton-Le-Skerne near Darlington. The church was successful in obtaining a Places of Worship Repairs Grant from English Heritage for roof and masonry repairs.

The works were completed in August 2012 and comprised the repair and repointing of rubble masonry walls and consolidation of the largely Norman tower using deep tamping with hydraulic lime mortar. The project also included the stripping back and re-tiling of the nave and chancel roofs using natural clay tiles, renewal of lead roofs to the transepts and associated internal redecoration of the ceilings using lime plaster.

The project was audited by English Heritage and received praise for adherence to its procurement guidelines.

‘Our QS has noted that this is one of the best examples he has seen nationally of following our guidelines and would like to thank you for making his life much easier’. English Heritage
